About Field Labeling
The primary purpose of most building, fire and life safety codes and standards is to ensure the safety of exiting occupants from a building during an emergency and to reduce potential property loss. Codes and standards mandate that building owners comply with NFPA 80: Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives and NFPA 105: Standard for Smoke Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives.
The most common deficiencies identified by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) during their inspections and surveys include:
- Labeled components of rated openings (such as doors, frames, and hardware) within the facility have been removed.
- Labels have been defaced or rendered
Sections 4.2 and 5.2 of NFPA 80 and Chapter 7 of the International Fire Code® (IFC®) provide specific guidance to building owners and AHJs about listed product labeling. Labels should not be removed, defaced or made illegible while the components of the rated opening are in service.
If the label on an existing opening protective component has been removed or is no longer legible, the application of field applied labels by an accredited third-party inspection and certification service associated with the maintenance of opening protective components is acceptable.
